BLACK ACADEMIC CAUCUS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
BETWEEN
THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
AND
THE BLACK ACADEMIC CAUCUS — UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

The Management of the University of Cape Town on behalf   of the University of Cape Town (“UCT”) and the Black Academic Caucus — University of Cape Town (“BAC”) (collectively, “Parties”) enter into this Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) to extend formal recognition to the BAC as an Interest Group (“IG”) at the UCT.

Background: Aligned to UCT’s strategic vision, BAC was founded in 2012, with the purpose of chal1enging the slow pace of transformation that continues to maintain hegemonies and reproduce colonial relations of power. BAC has been an active participant and has provided content to the development of decolonial thinking and transformation practices at UCT. As an organisation, our structure reflects our vision for generating change in key areas, of strategic importance to the University of Cape Town.

I.   The Parties agree to extend formal recognition to the BAC as an independent Interest Group at the University of Cape Town.

II. In line with UCT’s strategic vision, both parties commit to recognise BAC as an organisation of scholars at ICT that strives to meet its purpose and objectives as set out in the BAC Constitution and as an agent for transformation and decolonization.

III. Both parties commit to consultation and cooperation with respect to policies and decisions related to transformation at UCT.

IV. Both parties commit to cooperation and consultation when making submissions on Higher Education policy.

V. The parties note that Council has approved a commission to review committees and this work will commence in 2017. As part of this process the representation of the BAC on university structures such as Council and Senate, and other university committees will enjoy further attention.

VI. The parties commit that BAC be afforded reasonable access to university venues and resources for BAC meeting and events.

VII. This MOU may be altered only by mutual written consent of both Parties. Modifications of this MOU do not become effective until they are received in writing by both Parties.

VIII. The term of this MOU commences upon full execution and continues in effect until terminated; provided, however, that this MOU may be terminated at any time by either Party upon ninety days’ prior written notice to the other Party.

IX. Two identical official copies of this MOU in the English language are to be signed by each Party, with one copy to be retained by each Party,

    is widely used for a non-binding contract, which outlines 2 persons or businesses' intention to operate in consensus
